Faribault Wrestling brought 12 to qualify and advanced 4 individuals to the Minnesota 9th Grade State tournament this upcoming weekend, January 31. Seventh-grader Charlie Chambers (126 lbs), 9th graders Austin Rendler (138) and Dillon McEachran (Hwt) all won championships at their respective weights to advance. Also advancing was 9th grader Dillon Schrot (160) who took home second place after battling back in the consolation bracket and winning his True Second match. Just missing advancing to State was Josh Heyda (182) who took third place.
Earlier in the month, the Falcons made its return to 9th Grade Team action with a 3rd Place finish at the Eastview 9th Grade Team Tournament. The Falcons went 3-1 on the day with an opening-round 43-29 victory over host-team Eastview, then defeated Eden Prairie 43-30 before falling to New Prague 40-25 in the semifinals. They finished the competition with a 40-34 victory over Owatonna. Great job Falcons!
Seven years ago, there was a 4th Grader signed up to play basketball at the Community Center. One small problem – only two kids signed up. At the same time, the Faribault Wrestling Club was starting up a new Elementary In-House program. He made the switch to wrestling In-House, and as the saying goes – the rest is history.
The kid was junior Ryan Mullennex, newest member of Faribault’s 100-win Club.
“We signed him up for basketball at the community center and they called us a week later and gave our money back. There were only 2 kids signed up in his grade because all the other kids were wrestling – funny how things work out,” said Steve Mullennex, Ryan’s father and Wrestling Club Treasurer.
Mullennex reached the milestone last week during two wins in the triangular against Eastview and Chaska-Chanhassen. Since last week, he has continued his climb up the rankings with two more wins and now sits at 102 wins as of January 15.
“This accomplishment means a lot to me. It makes all the work I had to go through, worth it. Definitely a goal for this season, but I see it as a step on the way of getting 150,” said Ryan Mullennex.
“Ryan Mullennex has a strong desire to improve as a wrestler each day. He spends countless hours in the both the wrestling room and weight room. He works hard and with great determination on perfecting his technique,” said head coach Jesse Armbruster. “Ryan is a great person of value and a strong leader for a very young team. Not the most vocal in the room, but if you want to know how to become a winning wrestler, and more importantly, a winning person in life, just take a look at what Ryan is doing. He carries himself like a champion!”
Mullennex and the Falcons will travel Friday to the Henry Sibley Quad for three duals against Blaine, Richfield, and Henry Sibley. The following day on Saturday, they will be at the Eastview Invite.
The sign-up and parent meetings have passed, but it’s not too late to join. Middle School and High Schoolers, contact Coach Armbruster for information.
